What We Do
GEARS & DIFFERENTIALS
From regearing for larger tires to differential repairs, lockers and limited-slip upgrades, American Off-Road Customs provides complete gear and differential services for Jeeps, trucks, Broncos and Toyota 4x4s in Las Vegas. Whether you’re repairing a worn or damaged differential, restoring performance after installing larger tires, or upgrading traction for off-road use, we can help build the right setup for your vehicle.
ReGearing
Larger tires can change your vehicle’s effective gear ratio, causing sluggish acceleration, reduced throttle response and poor overall drivability. Regearing the axles with the proper ring-and-pinion ratio can help restore performance and give your Jeep or truck gearing that better matches its tire size and intended use.
AORC installs Yukon gears and complete installation kits in a variety of gear ratios. During a regear, we replace the necessary bearings, seals and hardware associated with the ring-and-pinion installation rather than simply swapping gears.
Not sure what gear ratio you need? We can help determine the right setup based on your vehicle, tire size, engine, transmission and how you use your 4×4—whether it’s a daily driver, tow rig, trail Jeep or dedicated rock crawler.
Lockers & limited Slip
Lockers and limited-slip differentials help improve traction by controlling how power is distributed between the wheels on an axle. For off-road vehicles, that can make a major difference when climbing rocks, navigating uneven terrain or dealing with situations where one tire loses traction.
AORC installs selectable lockers, automatic lockers and limited-slip differentials for Jeeps, trucks and other 4x4s. Selectable lockers, including air and electronic options, allow the driver to lock the differential when additional traction is needed and return to normal operation when it isn’t.
The right setup depends on how you use your vehicle. A daily-driven Jeep may need something very different from a dedicated rock crawler, so we can help you choose a locker or limited-slip setup that works with your axle, gearing and intended use.
Axle Shafts
Axle shafts are a critical part of transferring power from the differential to the wheels, and larger tires, lockers and hard off-road use can put significantly more stress on factory axle components. AORC offers axle shaft upgrades and supporting axle components for Jeeps, trucks and 4x4s built for everything from daily driving to serious rock crawling.
Chromoly Axle Shafts
Chromoly axle shafts are a popular upgrade for 4x4s running larger tires, lockers or seeing more demanding off-road use. Compared with many factory axle shafts, upgraded chromoly shafts are designed to handle increased loads and provide additional strength where the drivetrain is being pushed harder.
AORC commonly installs Yukon Gear & Axle and Revolution Gear & Axle components, with options available for different axle configurations and build goals. We can help determine the right axle shaft setup based on your axle, tire size, gearing and how you use your Jeep or truck.
U-Joints
U-joints are a critical connection point in the drivetrain and axle assembly, and worn or damaged joints can lead to vibration, clunking, binding or drivetrain failure. Larger tires, increased power and hard off-road use can also put additional stress on factory U-joints.
AORC can inspect and replace worn U-joints and install upgraded components when additional strength is needed. When we’re working on axle shafts, gearing or other drivetrain upgrades, we’ll also look at the supporting components to help make sure the entire setup works together.
RCV Axle upgrade
RCV axle shafts are a popular upgrade for Jeeps and 4x4s that need additional strength and smoother power delivery at increased steering angles. Their constant-velocity design eliminates the traditional front axle U-joint and is especially useful on vehicles running larger tires, lockers and more demanding off-road setups.
AORC installs RCV Performance axle shafts as part of individual axle upgrades or complete axle, gearing and locker builds. We can help determine whether RCVs are the right choice for your axle and overall build based on tire size, steering setup and how you use your 4×4.
axle housing reinforvement
Larger tires, harder trails and aggressive off-road use can put additional stress on the factory axle housing. Axle housing reinforcement can help strengthen vulnerable areas and reduce unwanted flex when a 4×4 is being pushed beyond stock conditions.
AORC can reinforce axle housings as part of a larger axle build or as a supporting upgrade when installing larger tires, upgraded shafts, lockers and other drivetrain components. The right reinforcement depends on the axle and how the vehicle is being used, so we build the setup around the complete vehicle rather than adding parts that aren’t necessary.
c-gussets
C-gussets reinforce the inner C areas of a front axle housing, which can experience additional stress from larger tires and hard off-road use. Welding gussets into these areas adds support to the factory housing and is a common reinforcement upgrade for modified Jeeps and other 4x4s.
AORC can install C-gussets individually or as part of a more complete axle reinforcement and upgrade package.
differential skid plates
The differential is one of the lowest points on many 4×4 axles, making the cover and housing vulnerable to rocks and other trail obstacles. Differential skid plates and heavy-duty differential covers add protection to help prevent damage during off-road use.
AORC can install differential protection as a stand-alone upgrade or as part of a complete axle build, depending on your axle and how you use your Jeep or truck.
Miscellaneous Axle upgrades
Not every axle build requires a complete replacement. Depending on the vehicle and how it’s used, upgrading individual components can improve strength, durability, clearance and off-road performance while retaining the existing axle housing.
AORC offers a variety of supporting axle upgrades including ball joints, steering knuckles, brake upgrades and other axle components for Jeeps, trucks and 4x4s. We can evaluate the complete axle setup and recommend the upgrades that make sense for your tire size, suspension, drivetrain and intended use.
Ball Joints
Worn ball joints can cause looseness in the front end, uneven tire wear, clunking and changes in steering or handling. On lifted and modified 4x4s, larger tires and additional off-road use can place even more stress on factory ball joints.
AORC can inspect and replace worn ball joints or install upgraded ball joints when additional strength and durability are needed. We work with both stock and modified Jeeps and trucks and can help determine the right option based on your axle, tire size and how the vehicle is used.
Steering Knuckles
Steering knuckles connect several critical front-end components and can become worn, damaged or inadequate for the demands of a heavily modified 4×4. Larger tires, upgraded axles and hard off-road use can place additional stress on these components.
AORC can inspect, replace and upgrade steering knuckles as part of an axle repair or complete axle build. We can help determine the right components based on your axle, tire size, suspension and intended use.
Brakes
Larger tires, heavier wheels and major axle upgrades can change the braking demands of a Jeep or truck. Depending on the vehicle and build, upgraded brake components can help provide the braking performance needed to match the rest of the setup.
AORC can inspect, service and upgrade brake components as part of an axle build or stand-alone repair. When planning an axle conversion or larger tire setup, we can evaluate the brakes along with the axle, wheels and tires to make sure the components work together properly.
Axle Conversions
When the factory axles are no longer the right foundation for the build, a complete axle conversion can provide the strength, gearing, clearance and component options needed for larger tires and more demanding off-road use. AORC performs custom axle conversions for Jeeps, trucks and other 4x4s, from upgraded heavy-duty axle assemblies to one-ton and portal axle setups.
Every axle conversion is planned around the complete vehicle—including tire size, suspension, steering, brakes, gearing, lockers and intended use. Whether you’re building a capable trail Jeep or a dedicated rock crawler, we can help determine which axle setup makes sense instead of simply installing the biggest axle available.
Axle options
AORC works with a variety of heavy-duty axle assemblies and components to build an axle setup around your vehicle, tire size and intended use. Depending on the build, options can include upgraded factory-style axles, Dana 60s, one-ton axle setups, fabricated housings and portal axles.
We work with axle manufacturers and components from brands including Currie Enterprises, Dynatrac, Dana, Fusion 4×4, Yukon Gear & Axle, Revolution Gear & Axle and 74Weld. The right axle isn’t simply the biggest or most expensive option—we’ll help determine the housing, gearing, lockers, axle shafts, brakes and supporting components that make sense for the complete build.

74WELD PORTAL AXLE INSTALLATION JEEP 392
This Jeep Wrangler 392 received a complete 74Weld portal axle installation performed in-house at American Off-Road Customs. The portal setup provides approximately 17 inches of ground clearance without changing the Jeep’s suspension geometry, while built-in hub gear reduction increases torque and crawl control for technical off-road use.
The installation also included reinforced axle and ball-joint components, MetalCloak Baller Joints and upgraded brakes to support the complete portal setup. This build is a great example of how portal axles can add ground clearance and gearing advantages without relying on additional suspension height.
